The Plancherel formula for countable groups

چکیده
We discuss a Plancherel formula for countable groups, which provides canonical decomposition of the regular representation such group Γ into direct integral factor representations. Our main result gives precise description this in terms FC-center Γfc (that is, normal subgroup consisting elements with finite conjugacy class); involves action an appropriate totally disconnected compact automorphisms Γfc. As application, we determine linear groups. In appendix, use to provide unified proof Thoma’s and Kaniuth’s theorems respectively characterize groups are type I those whose is II.

More than two decades ago, in his classical paper on the irreducible unitary representations of the Lorentz group, V. Bargmann initiated the concrete study of Fourier analysis on real Lie groups and obtained the analogue of the classical Fourier expansion theorem in the case of the Lorentz group. Since then the general theory for real semisimple Lie groups has been extensively developed, chiefl...

In HC], Harish-Chandra derived the Plancherel formula on p-adic groups. However, to have an explicit formula, one will have to compute the measures appearing in the formula. Here, we compute Plancherel measures on Sp 4 over p-adic elds explicitly.

1.1. Plancherel measures. Given a finite group G, by the corresponding Plancherel measure we mean the probability measure on the set G∧ of irreducible representations of G which assigns to a representation π ∈ G∧ the weight (dim π)/|G|. For the symmetric group S(n), the set S(n)∧ is the set of partitions λ of the number n, which we shall identify with Young diagrams with n squares throughout th...

We give a complete characterization of countable primitive groups in several settings including linear groups, subgroups of mapping class groups, groups acting minimally on trees and convergence groups. The latter category includes as a special case Kleinian groups as well as subgroups of word hyperbolic groups. As an application we calculate the Frattini subgroup in many of these settings, oft...
